The Project "Energy Efficient Schools: New Generation" (4th wave) was implemented by All-Ukrainian Charitable Organization Municipal Development Institute with financing from the energy company DTEK and in the locations where DTEK operates.

The objective of the Project was to promote energy efficiency in public buildings through implementation of low-cost energy efficiency measures, educate schoolchildren on energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly behavior, engage them in activities aimed at reducing consumption of resources, and also to influence adults by encouraging children to use received knowledge and skills in everyday life, and to create "demand for energy efficiency" among general public through media and education programs.

The tasks of the Project provided for expanding opportunities for stakeholders for effective investments in energy efficiency projects in public and residential buildings and for dissemination of best practices on energy saving and introduction of new energy efficient technologies, equipment and materials.

The Project's Wave Four consisted of three components: (1) Training Component; (2) Information Component; and (3) Stakeholder Engagement Component.  Under the Training Component, two training courses were implemented in participating secondary schools in the localities of operation of DTEK: optional course "Basics of energy supply and energy saving" for students of 6-8 grades of secondary schools and optional course "ABC of Management of Housing and Communal Services" for students of 9-11 grades of secondary schools (including the online interactive game "Smart House").  Under the Information Component, the Project worked to produce educational TV Programs and partner with regional and local channels to broadcast the educational programs in Project cities. The Project disseminated information on energy saving and energy efficiency in printed and broadcast media and through social networks. The school students of participating schools exchanged information during contests and Project events.  Under the Stakeholder Engagement Component, the Project worked to ensure maximum efficiency of investments by local governments in energy efficiency in schools and attract investments from stakeholders for increasing energy efficiency of public and residential buildings.

During 2012-2015, as a result of the implementation of 3 previous waves of the Project, 210 participating schools managed to save 312 thousand kWh of electric energy (12.3% as compared to previous periods); 125 schools implemented EE improvements with budgets raging from UAH 10 000 to 180 000. The implemented projects were developed by school students with assistance from MDI. The schools received USD 78 000 in grants to implement EE improvements (modernization of heating systems, reducing losses of heat and electricity, thermal insulation of school buildings). Almost 100 000 persons were directly involved in the Project – school students and their parents, teachers and other adults learned to be responsible consumers of energy resources. In 2015, the Project "Energy Efficient School" won the Grand Prix as the best social project in Ukraine.

Results and Achievements

  • In academic year 2016-2017, 79 schools participated in the Project: Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast (1 school), Vinnytsia Oblast (3 schools), Dnipropetrovsk Oblast (32 schools), Zaporizhzhia Oblast (2 schools), Donetsk Oblast (21 schools), Kyiv (17 schools), Luhansk Oblast (3 schools)
  • For the first time in Ukraine, under the Project, distance learning form of training was used for conducting two optional training courses for school students: "Basics of Energy Supply and Energy Saving" and "ABC of Management of Housing and Communal Services" – that made it possible to conduct knowledge checks, monitor implementation of the Project, and expand the geography of the Project.
  • Two contests were conducted under the Project: school contest on energy saving and school contest on improving EE of school buildings.
